Junctions

The reference profile defines the minimum required information to identify the location of a junction and its relationship to other elements of the road network.

While network nodes are often used for technical modeling purposes—such as introducing a new road link to reflect changes in physical characteristics (e.g. a change in road width or number of lanes)—junctions serve a distinct purpose. They represent decision or choice points where traffic may be directed onto alternative routes.

A junction’s relationship to the rest of the network can be expressed by indicating whether it functions as the start or end point of a given road link.

For more information, refer to the INSPIRE Technical Guidelines for Transport Networks.
