DATEX II packages addressed by the RRP The crucial types of data on regulations and restrictions

Static and dynamic traffic regulations, where applicable

Access conditions for bridges

This reference profile outlines the minimum information required for disseminating and describing traffic regulations specifically related to bridge access and usage. These regulations may be static (permanent) or dynamic (temporary or conditional) and are crucial to support safe and efficient traffic management across bridge structures.

Scope

Bridge-related traffic regulations aim to reflect legal or physical restrictions imposed to ensure structural integrity, safety, and appropriate usage by road users. According to DR (EU) 2022/670, the following regulation types may apply to bridges:

  • Access conditions: Restrictions based on vehicle type, load class, or tunnel/bridge classification systems that define which vehicles are permitted to use the bridge.
  • Weight/size restrictions: Legal or physical limitations on vehicle weight, height, length, or width, often determined by the structural characteristics or capacity of the bridge.
  • Speed limits: Speed restrictions that may be static or adjusted dynamically based on wind conditions, maintenance work, or traffic volumes.
  • One-way configurations or reversible lanes: Regulation of travel direction, particularly relevant for narrow bridges or those with variable lane use.
  • Overtaking bans: Restrictions on heavy goods vehicle overtaking, typically to reduce oscillations or stress on the bridge structure during peak usage or hazardous conditions.

Regulatory Sources

  • Traffic regulations for bridges may originate from:
  • Competent authorities (e.g., road administrations, municipalities), issuing legal rules;
  • Infrastructure operators, applying real-time safety measures;
  • Automated systems (e.g., weather-triggered speed reductions).

Required Information Elements

To ensure interoperability and integration with navigation and traffic systems, the following metadata must be included:

  • Legal basis of the regulation (if established by an authority)
  • Exact location of the bridge and affected area
  • Time validity (e.g., permanent or time-dependent restriction)
  • Applicability conditions (e.g., per vehicle class, lane, or direction)
  • Type of restriction (e.g., access, weight limit, speed regulation)
